Join Board Members Joe Sandulli, Dan Mayer and Deb Hamilton on a botanical tour of the Riverbend Conservation Area along the Merrimack River in West Newbury, MA on Sunday, June 26th from 10-11:30AM. Explore the wild rice marsh along the river, the mixed hardwoods of Pipestave Hill and trace the route of the Indian River from the banks of the Merrimack up a tidal estuary to the ruins of Pike’s Dam. Along the way we’ll see one the largest tupelo trees in the State, cross many old stone walls, pass an ancient cellar hole (and rum-runners’ hideout), a possible ancient Indian campsite, and cross a number of ECTA-built and designed bridges and boardwalks.
During the walk, Joe, Dan and Deb will point out significant riparian and upland trees and their notable characteristics for identification. Plan on walking for about 1 1/2 hours. Leashed dogs are welcome. Wear bug spray, hats, and boots suitable for the occasional muddy spot.
Directions: Take Rte I-95 to exit 58, Rte. 113, toward West Newbury. Turn right onto Coffin Street to the end, then right on River Road, park at the end.
Dan Mayer, president of Mayer Tree Service, studied arboriculture and forestry at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, is a Massachusetts Certified Arborist and has been involved in the tree care industry since 1984. Dan joined ECTA as a board member in 2012.
