Riverbend Walk
Registration is closed
Join ECTA Board member Deb Hamilton as she guides us on a tour of the Riverbend Conservation Area in West Newbury. Meet at the kiosk at the Mill Pond parking lot, off of Rte 113. (Across the street and just west of the Page School, which is 694 Main Street). Leashed dogs are welcome on this loop walk which should take about 1.5 hours.
The Riverbend Trails were developed over the past five years on town-owned but previously underutilized land running from the top of Pipestave Hill, on both sides of the Dr. John C Page Elementary School, down to both the Indian River and the Merrimack River at their confluence. Features of Riverbend include: ruins of an old sawmill and dam once that were sited where the incoming tide meets a flowing stream, remains of a former ski tow, old stone house foundations, open fields, an old orchard, a beech forest, views of the Indian River and Merrimac River, and a stand of giant Tupelo trees with one that exceeds the size of the official "state champ" at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.
Many other Heritage Trees, beech, oaks, ashes and maples, can be seen in the woods.
ECTA funds improved the oft-flooded River Road Trail with crushed stone and elevated stepping stones, and rebuilt the buttresses for the town-built bridge, making it safer for horses, bikes and walkers.
